Do you not know, brothers, (for I speak to those that know the law,) how that the law has dominion over a man as [chronos] long as he lives?
- CHRONOS - TIME
For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to [her] husband while he is alive; but if the husband has died, she has been released from the law of [her] husband.
So then if, while [her] husband is alive, she is married to another man, she will be called an adulteress: but if her husband has died, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she is married to another man.
Therefore, my brothers, you also have become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that you should be married to another, to He who was raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit to God.
For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were a result of the law, worked through our bodily members to bear fruit leading to death.
But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead in what we were being held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not [in] the oldness of the written laws.
What will we say then? [Is] the law sin? God forbid. No, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, You will not covet.
But sin, taking opportunity through the commandments, produced in me all kinds of sinful desires. For without the law sin [was] dead.
For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.
And the commandment, which led to [zoe] life, I found led to death.
For sin, taking advantage through the commandment, deceived me, and through it brought me to death.
Therefore the law [is] holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
Was then that which is good made death to me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.
For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am fleshly, sold as a slave to sin.
For I am continually doing the things that I do not want to do: and what I do want to do, I am not doing; instead I am doing the things that I hate.
If then I am doing things that I do not want to do, I admit that the law is good.
Right now then, it is no more me doing these things, but sin that is at home within me.
For I know that inside me (that is, in my flesh,) there is living something that is no good: for I really want to do what is good ; but working out how to do what is good is something I cannot seem to discover.
For the good things that I want to do, I am not doing: but the bad things that I do not want to do are what I am carrying out.
Now if I am doing the things that I do not want to do, then it is no longer me that is doing it, but sin that is at home inside of me.
I find then a law, that, when I want to do good, evil is present with me.
For I delight in the law of God as far as my inner being is concerned:
But I identify another law in my body members, at war against the law of my mind [nous], and making me a captive to the law of sin that is in my body members.
Miserable human being that I am! Who will rescue me from the fleshly body that contains this death?
I continually give thanks to God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind [nous] I personally am indeed serving the law of God; but with the flesh, the law of sin.
