Bible Text  (Scroll to Verse)  [Copy]  [Read Bible Only]

Now on the first [day] of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and some other people came with them.
And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.
And they entered in, and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
And so while they were quite perplexed about this, two men stood by them in shining garments:
These were angels and their appearance gives us an idea of what angels look like. Firstly they are generally seen to be male in gender. There is no evidence of a female angel. Then, their clothes were shining

And as they were afraid, and fell face down to the earth, they said to them, Why are you looking for the living among the dead?
He is not here, but has arisen: remember how he spoke to you when he was still in Galilee,
Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.
And they remembered his [rhema] words,

And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things to the eleven, and to all the rest.
It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary [the mother] of James, and other [women that were] with them, who told these things to the apostles.
And their [rhema] words seemed to them as idle tales, and they did not believe them.

Then Peter rose up, and ran to the sepulchre; and stooping down, he saw the linen clothes laying by themselves, and he left, wondering in himself at what had happened.
Peter of all people should have remembered that Jesus said He would arise

And, then two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was about twelve kilometers from Jerusalem.
And they talked together about all these things that had happened.
And it happened that, while they fellowshipped together and discussed things, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.
They were busy talking with one another - this is what is involved in fellowship
- FELLOWSHIP

But their eyes were held back so that they would not recognize him.
Jesus appearance must have changed. we generally tend to remember someone and recognize them even if we only met them once.

And he said to them, What kind of conversation are these that you are having with one another, as you are walking, and are being sad?
And one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering his question, said to him, Are you only a stranger in Jerusalem, and have not known the things that have taken place there recently?
And he said to them, What things? And they said to him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:
And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.
But we trusted that it had been he who would have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, today is the third day since these things took place.
Jesus told them many times He would arise on the third day.

Yes, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, who were early at the sepulchre;
And when they did not find his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.
And some of those who were with us went to the sepulchre, and found [it] just as the women had said: but they did not see him.
Then he said to them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:
Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?
There is always a price to pay to experience God’s glory

And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
And they drew near to the village, where they were going: and he made as though he wanted to go further.
But they urged him, saying, Stay with us: for it is nearly evening time, and the day is coming to an end. And he went in to stay with them.
And then it happened, as he sat to eat with them, he took bread, and blessed [it], and broke, and gave some to them.
And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished out of their sight.
It was the event that triggered the memory of Jesus breaking the bread.

And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he was talking with us along the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?
And they rose up right away, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and those that were with them,
Saying, The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon.
And they reported what had happened along the way, and how he became known to them through the breaking of bread.
And as they were speaking like this, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, Peace [be] to you.
But they were terrified and and filled with fear, and thought they had seen a ghost.
And he said to them, Why are you upset? and why are your hearts full of questions?
See my hands and my feet, that it is really me: feel me, and see; for a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see me have.
And when he had spoken like this, he showed them [his] hands and [his] feet.
And while they were still doubting, out of pure joy and amazement, he said to them, Do you have any food?
And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and some honeycomb.
And he took [it], and ate in front of them.
And he said to them, These [are] the words that I spoke to you, while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and [in] the prophets, and [in] the psalms, concerning me.
Then he opened up their minds [nous], so that they could understand the scriptures,
And said to them, This is how it was written, and therefore it was necessary for Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:
And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
And you are witnesses of these things.
And, look, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you: but wait in the city of Jerusalem, until you are endued with [dynamic] power from on high.
And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them.
And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.
And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:
And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.
