Bible Text (Scroll to Verse)  [Copy]
And there was a famine in the land, apart from the first famine that there was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines to Gerar.
And the LORD [Yahweh] appeared to him, and said, Do not go down into Egypt; dwell in the land that I tell you about:
Stay in this land, and I will be with you, and will bless you; for to you, and to your descendants, I will give all these lands, and I will fulfill the oath which I swore to Abraham your father;
And I will cause your descendants to multiply like the stars of heaven, and will give to your descendants all these lands; and in your seed all the nations of the earth will be blessed;
Because Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.
And Isaac stayed in Gerar:
And the men of the place asked [him] about his wife; and he said, She [is] my sister: because he was afraid to say, [She is] my wife; in case, [he thought], the men of the place might kill me for Rebekah; because she looks beautiful.
And it occurred, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw Isaac [was] playing with Rebekah his wife.
And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Look, it is clear she [is] your wife: how come you said, She [is] my sister? And Isaac said to him, Because I thought, I might die because of her.
And Abimelech said, What [is] this you have done to us? One of our people could easily have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt on us.
And Abimelech issued orders to all the people, saying, Anybody who touches this man or his wife will surely be put to death.
Then Isaac planted seed in that land, and received in the same year a hundred times as much: and the LORD [Yahweh] blessed him.
And the man became great, moving steadily ahead, until he became famous:
For he had flocks of sheep and goats, and herds of cattle, and a large household of servants: and the Philistines envied him.
All the wells that his father's servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped up, and filled with earth.
And Abimelech said to Isaac, Move away from us; because you are much bigger than us.
So Isaac left there, and set up camp in the valley of Gerar, and lived there.
And Isaac dug again the wells of water, which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham: and he called them by the names that his father had called them.
And Isaac's servants dug in the valley, and found there a well of living water.
And the herdsmen of Gerar argued with Isaac's herdmen, saying, The water [is] ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they quarreled with him.
And they dug another well, and argued over that also: and he called the name of it Sitnah.
And he moved away from there, and dug another well; and they did not quarrel over that: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, Now the LORD [Yahweh] has made room for us, and we will be fruitful in the land.
And he went up from there to Beersheba.
And the LORD [Yahweh] appeared to him that night, and said, I [am] the God of Abraham your father: do not be afraid, for I [am] with you, and will bless you, and increase your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham.
And he built an altar there, and called upon the name of the LORD [Yahweh], and set up camp there: Isaac's servants dug a well there.
Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phichol the chief captain of his army.
And Isaac said to them, Why are you coming to me, since you hate me, and have sent me away from you?
And they said, We saw clearly that the LORD [Yahweh] was with you: and we said, Let there now exist a contract between us, between us and you, and let us make a covenant with you;
That you will do us no harm, as we have not touched you, and since we have done to you nothing but good, and have sent you away in peace: you [are] now the blessed of the LORD [Yahweh].
And he made them a feast, and they ate and drank.
And they rose up early in the morning, and swore to one another: and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.
And it occurred that same day, that Isaac's servants came, and told him about the well that they had dug, and said to him, We have found water.
And he called it Shebah: therefore the name of the city [is] Beersheba to this day.
And Esau was forty years old when he married Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite:
Who were a source of grief to Isaac and Rebekah.
