Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Genesis 1:27 27 So God created man in his [own] image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Genesis can be broken down into two parts:

1. Prehistory contains everything from Genesis 1 to 12, or everything until the birth of Abraham. The first part includes creation, the Great Flood and the Tower of Babel. From Genesis 12 to 50 is the story of the Patriarchs. They include Abraham, his son Isaac

2. Isaac's son Jacob also the father of Joseph, who is not considered a patriarch but is very important.

These men make up the start of the nation of Israel.
