Study on PHILEO - EMOTIONAL LOVE:
So when they had eaten, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, [son] of Jonah, do you [agape] love me more than these? He said to him, Yes, Lord; you know that I [phileo] love you. He said to him, Feed my lambs.
Jesus used agape for love - the ultimate spiritual love. Peter used phileo for love -,ordinary human affection.
He said to him again the second time, Simon, [son] of Jonah, do you [agape] love me? He said to him, Yes, Lord; you know that I [phileo] love you. He said to him, Shepherd my sheep.
Each question was followed by a ministry commission.
He said to him the third time, Simon, [son] of Jonah, do you [phileo] love me? Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, Do you [phileo] love me? And he said to him, Lord, you know all things; you know that I [phileo] love you. Jesus said to him, Feed my sheep.
This time Jesus also used phileo, which means he was even questioning Peter’s human love.
