"Write down the revelation
and make it plain on tablets
so that a herald may run with it.
For the revelation awaits an appointed time;
it speaks of the end
and will not prove false.
Though it linger, wait for it;
it will certainly come
and will not delay.
Habakkuk 2:2-3
Important points about the Book:
Habakkuk cried out to God during a very dark time in Israel. Habakkuk likely prophesied in the first five years of
King Jehoiakim's reign. This king led the people into evil. The Assyrians had control of the Northern Kingdom
(Kingdom of Israel) after a brutal invasion more than 100 years earlier. Habakkuk preached from the Southern
Kingdom (Kingdom of Judah), which was still intact but less than 50 years away from its own invasion by Babylon
that destroyed the Temple. The pressure was on.
The book begins with a heartfelt prayer to God, full of anguish about the evil Habakkuk was seeing around him.
God responded with a prophecy that was general. Unlike other minor prophets, Habakkuk was not given the names
of specific places that would fall. It was a general, but beautiful, promise that God was in charge, and no matter
what happened, justice would occur in the end.
