CLAIMS TO FAME: Song of Solomon is considered the romantic book of the Bible for
people in love. It was written as one continuing poem.
MOST FAMOUS VERSES:
Strengthen me with raisins, refresh me with apples, for I am faint with love. Song of Solomon 2:5
Dark am I, yet lovely, daughters of Jerusalem, dark like the tents of Kedar, like the tent curtains of
Solomon. Song of Solomon 1:5
Important points about the Book:
We live in a world where sexual relations have often been spoken of as dangerous and sinful. Much of the
Bible speaks of the dangers of falling in love with the wrong person or becoming sexually engaged with
the wrong person. Stories from Samson and Delilah to the adulterous woman charged in front of Jesus
can be jarring in their warnings.
Therefore, Solomon's poetry helps to balance out with reminders that romantic passion is a great thing.
Solomon began the book with the two lovers in courtship. They express how much they longing for
affection and how they love each other. Eventually, they come together in marriage, the groom extolling
his bride's beauty. Finally, she struggles with the idea of desertion, while the man promises always to be
faithful. All of this expresses the goodness of love and marriage.
Some say the book also reflects the feelings of Christ and his love for his bride, which is the church.
