BOOK #9 AUTHOR: APOSTLE PAUL WRITTEN: 49-50 AD Old Testament: 39 Books 9 w Testament: 27 Books CLAIMS TO FAME: Contains the famed "fruit of the spirit" passage which lists the nine fruits. PROBLEMS OR ISSUES THIS BOOK IS ADDRESSING: MOST FAMOUS VERSES: You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Galatians 3:1 • The Galatians were starting to say Gentiles needed to follow Jewish laws in order to be saved. It was confusing the people and putting a burden on them that was unnecessary. Paul wanted to straighten that out. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness. Galatians 5:22 Important points about the Book: • In the first two chapters, Paul defends against accusations that he is not a true apostle by explaining his spiritual experience with the gospel, and what his life was like before his conversion. He then uses his relationship with the other apostles as proof that he is an apostle. In Chapters 3-5 Paul rails on the Galatians a bit for becoming legalistic. He explains that Jesus sets people free; he doesn't put them in bondage to hard laws. Salvation comes through faith and not following laws, he reminds them. In Chapters 5 & 6 he teaches about how to live, and the fruit of the spirit is part of that.
