1 Saulus aber willigte in seine Tötung mit ein. Es entstand aber an jenem Tage eine große Verfolgung wider die Versammlung, die in Jerusalem war; und alle wurden in die Landschaften von Judäa und Samaria zerstreut, ausgenommen die Apostel.
2 Gottesfürchtige Männer aber bestatteten den Stephanus und stellten eine große Klage über ihn an.
3 Saulus aber verwüstete die Versammlung, indem er der Reihe nach in die Häuser ging; und er schleppte sowohl Männer als Weiber fort und überlieferte sie ins Gefängnis.
4 Die Zerstreuten nun gingen umher und verkündigten das Wort.
Every believer was considered a preacher in the early church. These ordinary believers went out preaching the Gospel and many people were saved.
- PREACHING

5 Philippus aber ging hinab in eine Stadt Samarias und predigte ihnen den Christus.
It does not say he preached the Gospel or salvation. It says the he preached Christ. When Christ becomes the center of our ministry, we preach a lot more than the atonement and being born again. Philip also followed up by performing miracles.

6 Und die Volksmengen achteten einmütig auf das, was von Philippus geredet wurde, indem sie zuhörten und die Zeichen sahen, die er tat.
Just as Jesus showed, the preaching of the Gospel should always include miracles that demonstrate the power of God and also confirm that Jesus is alive.

7 Denn von vielen, welche unreine Geister hatten, fuhren sie aus, mit lauter Stimme schreiend; und viele Gelähmte und Lahme wurden geheilt.
The main activities which usually accompany the preaching of the Gospel are deliverance and healing. Often these two go together.

8 Und es war eine große Freude in jener Stadt.
9 Ein gewisser Mann aber, mit Namen Simon, befand sich vorher in der Stadt, der Zauberei trieb und das Volk von Samaria außer sich brachte, indem er von sich selbst sagte, daß er etwas Großes sei;
Demonic gifts always exalt the person using them, whereas the Gifts of the Spirit always exalt Jesus.

10 welchem alle, vom Kleinen bis zum Großen, anhingen, indem sie sagten: Dieser ist die Kraft Gottes, die man die große nennt.
11 Sie hingen ihm aber an, weil er sie lange Zeit mit den Zaubereien außer sich gebracht hatte.
 - CHRONOS - TIME
12 Als sie aber dem Philippus glaubten, der das Evangelium von dem Reiche Gottes und dem Namen Jesu Christi verkündigte, wurden sie getauft, sowohl Männer als Weiber.
Baptism should always be included in the preaching of the Gospel. It is a part of the covenant process that is applied when a person is born again.
- KINGDOM OF GOD

13 Aber auch Simon selbst glaubte, und als er getauft war, hielt er sich zu Philippus; und als er die Zeichen und großen Wunder sah, welche geschahen, geriet er außer sich.
Simon's later behavior has led many to teach that he did not really get born again but only pretended. But since this account was written long after the events, the writer would surely have said that Simon pretended to believe.

This is important because Simon is a clear picture of a believer who is still demonized and how such a person should be dealt with.

14 Als aber die Apostel, welche in Jerusalem waren, gehört hatten, daß Samaria das Wort Gottes angenommen habe, sandten sie Petrus und Johannes zu ihnen;
15 welche, als sie hinabgekommen waren, für die beteten, damit sie den Heiligen Geist empfangen möchten;
It seems strange that Philip did not have this as part of his ministry. Perhaps an important reason is that laying on of hands can sometimes impart other things and should be done by more mature believers only.

16 denn er war noch nicht auf einen von ihnen gefallen, sondern sie waren allein getauft auf den Namen des Herrn Jesus.
Notice that it does not say they were baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. All of the early apostles baptized new believers in the Name of Jesus. They understood that when Jesus spoke of baptizing in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit it only meant that the name of Jesus now embraced the whole Godhead, because Jesus had been given the name above all names.

17 Dann legten sie ihnen die Hände auf, und sie empfingen den Heiligen Geist.
The act of laying hands caused an impartation to take place. Jesus used it to heal the sick, and now it was also used to impart the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

18 Als aber Simon sah, daß durch das Auflegen der Hände der Apostel der [Heilige] Geist gegeben wurde,
The experience of receiving the Holy Spirit was a visible thing, which means that it caused some kind of manifestation or activity. The most common at that time, and still applies today, is when the person begins to speak with other tongues.

19 bot er ihnen Geld an und sagte: Gebet auch mir diese Gewalt, auf daß, wem irgend ich die Hände auflege, er den Heiligen Geist empfange.
Simon saw this as an authority rather than a divine ability.
- AUTHORITY

20 Petrus aber sprach zu ihm: Dein Geld fahre samt dir ins Verderben, weil du gemeint hast, daß die Gabe Gottes durch Geld zu erlangen sei!
21 Du hast weder Teil noch Los an dieser Sache, denn dein Herz ist nicht aufrichtig vor Gott.
Peter discerned something in Simon and told him that his heart was not right with God.

22 Tue nun Buße über diese deine Bosheit und bitte den Herrn, ob dir etwa der Anschlag deines Herzens vergeben werde;
23 denn ich sehe, daß du in Galle der Bitterkeit und in Banden der Ungerechtigkeit bist.
Peter discerned that Simon was bound by bitterness and an evil spirit. Yet he was a believer, and the demon was still there influencing him.

24 Simon aber antwortete und sprach: Bittet ihr für mich den Herrn, damit nichts über mich komme von dem, was ihr gesagt habt.
He passed the responsibility to them instead of dealing with his own sin. This is a common error in deliverance where believers are concerned. When a demon is resident with a believer, it has a legal right through sin. And only the person can repent and renounce this. Many deliverance ministries fail to get the person first to confess and renounce, and when they try to pray, the demons end up manifesting in the same way as in unbelievers.

But when a believer confesses the sin that opened the door to the enemy and renounces the license they gave to the enemy, the demon no longer has a right to be there and must leave. When you follow this procedure in dealing with demons in believers, it is not necessary to cast the demons out in the same way as with unbelievers.

25 Nachdem sie nun das Wort des Herrn bezeugt und geredet hatten, kehrten sie nach Jerusalem zurück und verkündigten das Evangelium vielen Dörfern der Samariter.
Their preaching now was not to get the people saved since they had already become believers. But now they preached the Word, which included probably some principles of living the spiritual life in Christ.

26 Ein Engel des Herrn aber redete zu Philippus und sprach: Stehe auf und geh gegen Süden auf den Weg, der von Jerusalem nach Gaza hinabführt; derselbe ist öde.
It took the work of an angel to bring this revelation to Philip rather than an internal revelation. Here is the function of a messenger angel

27 Und er stand auf und ging hin. Und siehe ein Äthiopier, ein Kämmerer, ein Gewaltiger der Kandace, der Königin der Äthiopier, der über ihren ganzen Schatz gesetzt war, war gekommen, um zu Jerusalem anzubeten;
28 und er war auf der Rückkehr und saß auf seinem Wagen und las den Propheten Jesaias.
29 Der Geist aber sprach zu Philippus: Tritt hinzu und schließe dich diesem Wagen an.
This time God did not speak via an angel, but He spoke in his spirit, telling him to go closer to the chariot.

30 Philippus aber lief hinzu und hörte ihn den Propheten Jesaias lesen und sprach: Verstehst du auch, was du liesest?
He was clearly reading out loud from the scroll. The fact that he even had a scroll showed that he had wealthy connections because scrolls could not be easily duplicated like books are today. A copy would need to be hand written on a new scroll.

31 Er aber sprach: Wie könnte ich denn, wenn nicht jemand mich anleitet? Und er bat den Philippus, daß er aufsteige und sich zu ihm setze.
This was perfect timing, and he invited Philip to join him on the chariot.

32 Die Stelle der Schrift aber, welche er las, war diese: "Er wurde wie ein Schaf zur Schlachtung geführt, und wie ein Lamm stumm ist vor seinem Scherer, also tut er seinen Mund nicht auf.
You can see God's foreknowledge and calling here. This man's heart had been prepared and ready to hear the Gospel. He was reading a prophecy about Jesus' work on Calvary. This is why Philip was told to go down to where he was traveling so that he could explain the full Gospel to him. Theologians call the process of preparing a person to receive the Gospel as "prevenient grace." or grace that comes before.

When you are led by the Lord in ministering to unbelievers, you will find God bringing you across the paths of those whom He has already begun to prepare. Then, there is no struggle to get them born again. Their hearts are open and ready to receive.

33 In seiner Erniedrigung wurde sein Gericht weggenommen; wer aber wird sein Geschlecht beschreiben? Denn sein Leben wird von der Erde weggenommen."
34 Der Kämmerer aber antwortete dem Philippus und sprach: Ich bitte dich, von wem sagt der Prophet dieses? Von sich selbst oder von einem anderen?
35 Philippus aber tat seinen Mund auf, und, anfangend von dieser Schrift, verkündigte er ihm das Evangelium von Jesu.
Philip gave him quite a detailed breakdown and even included the need for water baptism. This is why he asked about baptism when they came to some water.

36 Als sie aber auf dem Wege fortzogen, kamen sie an ein gewisses Wasser. Und der Kämmerer spricht: Siehe, da ist Wasser; was hindert mich, getauft zu werden?
37 (Dieser Vers gehört nicht zum ursprünglichen Text der Apostelgeschichte).
It is faith in Jesus that saves us, not water baptism. Philip needed to make sure that he understood this before baptizing him.

38 Und er hieß den Wagen halten. Und sie stiegen beide in das Wasser hinab, sowohl Philippus als der Kämmerer; und er taufte ihn.
39 Als sie aber aus dem Wasser heraufstiegen, entrückte der Geist des Herrn den Philippus; und der Kämmerer sah ihn nicht mehr, denn er zog seinen Weg mit Freuden.
This must have been quite an experience for the eunuch. People do not usually disappear. It is one of few cases in the Scripture of someone being supernaturally transported by the Holy Spirit.
- SPIRIT OF GOD

40 Philippus aber wurde zu Asdod gefunden; und indem er hindurchzog, verkündigte er das Evangelium allen Städten, bis er nach Cäsarea kam.
