Bible Text  (Scroll to Verse)  [Copy]  [Read Bible Only]

1 After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and in this way he showed [himself].
2 There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the [sons] of Zebedee, and two of his other disciples.
3 Simon Peter said to them, I am going fishing. They said to him, We will also go with you. They went out, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing.
Peter was attempting to return to his career since Jesus was no longer there.

4 But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.
5 Then Jesus said to them, Children, do you have any food? They answered him, No.
6 And he said to them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and you will find [some]. They therefore cast, and now they were not able to draw it because of the great number of fishes.
7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tied [his] fisher's coat [around him], (for he was naked,) and cast himself into the sea.
His fishing coat was a form of mantle identifying him as a fisherman.

8 And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes.
9 As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread.
10 Jesus said to them, Bring [some] of the fish that you have now caught.
11 Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, a hundred and fifty three: and even though there were so many, yet the net was not broken.
12 Jesus said to them, Come [and] eat. And none of the disciples dared to ask him, Who are you? knowing that it was the Lord.
13 Jesus then came, and took bread, and gave to them, and fish in the same way.
14 This was now the third time that Jesus showed himself to his disciples, after he had risen from the dead.
15 So when they had eaten, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, [son] of Jonah, do you [agape] love me more than these? He said to him, Yes, Lord; you know that I [phileo] love you. He said to him, Feed my lambs.
Jesus used agape for love - the ultimate spiritual love. Peter used phileo for love -,ordinary human affection.
- AGAPE - DIVINE LOVE - PHILEO - EMOTIONAL LOVE

16 He said to him again the second time, Simon, [son] of Jonah, do you [agape] love me? He said to him, Yes, Lord; you know that I [phileo] love you. He said to him, Shepherd my sheep.
Each question was followed by a ministry commission.
- AGAPE - DIVINE LOVE - PHILEO - EMOTIONAL LOVE

17 He said to him the third time, Simon, [son] of Jonah, do you [phileo] love me? Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, Do you [phileo] love me? And he said to him, Lord, you know all things; you know that I [phileo] love you. Jesus said to him, Feed my sheep.
This time Jesus also used phileo, which means he was even questioning Peter’s human love.
- PHILEO - EMOTIONAL LOVE

18 Most assuredly, I say to you, When you were young, you dressed yourself, and walked wherever you wanted: but when you are old, you will stretch forth your hands, and another will dress you, and carry [you] where you do not want to go.
At least Peter knew he would not die young.

19 This he spoke, indicating by what death he would glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he said to him, Follow me.
20 Then Peter, turning about, saw the disciple that Jesus loved, following; the one who had also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, who is the one that is betraying you?
21 Peter seeing him said to Jesus, Lord, and what about him?
22 Jesus said to him, If I want him to stay until I come, what has that got to do with you? You follow me.
John did in fact outlive all the others. He died of old age.

23 Then this rumour was spread among the brothers, that that disciple would not die: yet Jesus did not say to him, He will not die; but, If I want him to wait until I come, what [is that] to you?
24 This is the disciple who testifies of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true.
25 And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were all to be written down in detail, I think that not even the world itself would have space to hold all the books that would be written. Amen.
Each Gospel writer only wrote down what they remembered. But Jesus did far more in His lifetime.
