Bible Text  (Scroll to Verse)  [Copy]

At that time some scribes and Pharisees, who were from Jerusalem, came to Jesus, saying,
Why do your disciples violate the tradition of the elders? because they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.
- ARCHETYPE
But he answered and said to them, Why do you also violate the commandment of God by your tradition?
For God commanded, saying, Honor your father and mother: and, He that curses father or mother should be put to death.
But you say, Whoever will say to [his] father or [his] mother, whatever you might have benefited from me is a gift to God;
He need not honor his father or his mother. Thus you have made the commandment of God invalid.
[You] hypocrites, Isaiah prophesied well concerning you, saying,
These people draw near to me with their mouth, and honor me with [their] lips; but their heart is far from me.
But they worship me to no purpose, teaching [for] doctrines the commandments of men.
And he called the multitude, and said to them, Hear, and understand:
It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a man; but it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles a man.
Then his disciples came, and said to him, Did you know that the Pharisees were offended on hearing these [logos] words?
- LOGOS - WORD
But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father has not planted, will be rooted up.
Leave them alone: they are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into the ditch.
Then Peter responded by saying to him, Explain this parable to us.
And Jesus said, Are you still lacking in intelligence?
Do you still not understand, that whatever enters in at the mouth goes into the stomach, and is expelled into the toilet?
But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart; and they defile the man.
For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander:
These are what defile a man: but eating with unwashed hands does not defile a man.
Then Jesus left there, and withdrew to the coasts of Tyre and Sidon.
And, behold, a Canaanite woman from that area came and cried out, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is badly demonized.
But he responded without a word. And his disciples came and asked him, saying, Set her free; because she is crying after us.
But he answered and said, I have no [apostolic] commission except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
Then she came and bowed before him, saying, Lord, help me.
But he answered and said, It is not good to take the children's bread, and to throw it to the dogs.
And she said, That's true, Lord: yet the little puppies eat from the crumbs that fall from their masters' table.
Then Jesus answered and said to her, O woman, great [is] your faith: let it be to you just as you wish. And her daughter was healed from that very hour.
And Jesus left there, and went near to the sea of Galilee; and climbed up into a mountain, and sat down there.
And great crowds came to him, having with them the lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many other [sick people], and put them down at Jesus' feet; and he healed them:
Therefore the crowd were filled with wonder, when they saw the dumb speaking, the maimed well, the lame walking, and the blind seeing: and they glorified the God of Israel.
Then Jesus called his disciples to himself, and said, I feel for the crowd, because they have stayed with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away not having eaten, in case they get exhaused on the way.
And his disciples said to him, Where are we going to get enough bread in this deserted place to satisfy such a huge crowd?
But Jesus said to them, How many loaves do you have? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes.
And he ordered the multitude to sit down on the ground.
And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, broke, and gave them to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
And they all ate, and were satisfied: and from the left over pieces they gathered seven full baskets.
Now those that ate were four thousand men, besides women and children.
And he dismissed the multitude, and boarded a ship, and came to the region of Magdala.
