1 Dem Vorsänger. Ein Maskil von den Söhnen Korahs. Wie ein Hirsch lechzt nach Wasserbächen, also lechzt meine Seele nach dir, o Gott!
The soul of man is dry and lacking without the presence of God. And just as a deer seeks for water when it grows thirsty, so our soul longs for the presence of God when it is feeling dry. This includes feeling emotionally low as well as weak in will power. Only God can bring the soul to full health and function.
We try to meet this need with other people and they can help up to a point, because they have some of God in their spirits. But ultimately it is the presence of the creator that makes all the difference.

2 Meine Seele dürstet nach Gott, nach dem lebendigen Gott: Wann werde ich kommen und erscheinen vor Gottes Angesicht?
