1 [In] my previous book, Dear Theophilus, I wrote of all that Jesus began to do and to teach, 2 Until the day on which he was taken up, after he had through the Holy Spirit given commandments to the apostles whom he had chosen: 3 To whom he also revealed himself alive after his suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them forty days, and speaking about the things relating to the Kingdom of God: 4 And, being assembled together with [them], He commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, [as he said], you have heard about from me. 5 Because John certainly baptised in water; but you will be baptised in the Holy Spirit not many days from now. 6 When they therefore had assembled together, they asked him, saying, Lord, are you going to at this [chronos] time period restore again the kingdom to Israel? 7 And he said to them, It is not for you to know the [chronos] time periods or the [kairos] dates, which the Father has placed in his own authority. 8 But you will hold [dynamic] power in your hands, after the Holy Spirit has come upon you: and you will be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. 9 And when he had spoken these things, while they watched, he was taken up; and a cloud carried him away out of their sight. 10 And while they kept staring toward heaven as he went up, two men stood by them in white clothing; 11 Who also said, You men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, who is taken up from you into heaven, will return in the same way as you have seen him go into heaven. 12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is a Sabbath day's journey from Jerusalem. 13 And when they arrived, they went up into an upper room, which housed Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James [the son] of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas [the brother] of James. 14 These all united together as one in prayer and petition, with the wives, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. 15 And during that period Peter stood up amongst the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about a hundred and twenty,) 16 Men [and] fellow believers, this scripture needed to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke through the mouth of David before concerning Judas, who was a guide to those that took Jesus. 17 For he was enlisted with us, and was specifically chosen for this ministry. 18 Now this man purchased a field with the rewards of sin; and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle, and all his bowels gushed out. 19 And it was known to all the residents of Jerusalem; with the result that the field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, in other words, The field of blood. 20 For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his home be deserted, and let no man live in it: and his position of leadership let another take. 21 Therefore from these men who have accompanied us all the [chronos] time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 Beginning with the baptism of John, until that same day that he was taken up from us, one must be appointed to be a witness with us of his resurrection. 23 And they set aside two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. 24 And they prayed, and said, You, Lord, knower of the hearts of everyone, show which of these two You have chosen, 25 That he may take up his election to this position and the apostleship, which Judas fell away from, to go to his own chosen position. 26 And they cast their lots; and the lot fell to Matthias; and he was enlisted with the eleven apostles.
